Justice Adolphus A. Birch Building
Location: Nashville, TN
Owner: Metropolitan Government of Nashville
Architect: Gresham, Smith and Partners
A classical rendering of Lady Justice and a quote from Alexander Hamilton — “The first duty of society is justice” — adorn the façade of this 235,000 square state-of-the-art courthouse facility. The building is located in downtown Nashville and named in honor of Justice Adolpho A. Birch, former Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice. The six-story structure houses more than a dozen courtrooms for Criminal Court and General Sessions Court proceedings, as well as judges chambers, jury selection facilities, prisoner holding cells, administrative offices and an underground parking garage. A skywalk connects the Birch Building to the Criminal Justice Center and helps ensure the secure transfer of inmates.
